NEW ROCHELLE, NY — The Monroe College women’s soccer team claimed its second straight District E title with a 7-0 blanking of the Community College of Rhode Island in the district championship game at Westchester Community College in Valhalla on Sunday. The Mustangs were a perfect 2-0 against the Knights this season and outscored them 15-0 in the two matchups.
Monroe wasted little time getting on the board as Aline Delima opened the scoring in the first minute. She stole the ball on the left side of the box, dribbled past a couple of defenders and beat the goalie inside the far post. Just 0:43 into the game and Monroe led, 1-0.
The score went to 2-0 at 16:54 when Kathellen Sousa, whom missed the semi-final, played a long ball down to Nicole Rivera on the right side. The Washingtonville, New York, product then went inside the far post for the score. The Mustangs made it 3-0 when Delima scored her second of the game in the 24th minute. Maia Williams took in a loose ball after an errant shot. She passed it across the box to Delima for the goal. Delima would get a hat trick at 38:56 when she scored off a Rivera feed. For good show, Delima netted her team-best fourth goal of the game less than a minute later. This time the helpers went to Rivera and Williams.
Up 5-0 at the half, Monroe added a pair of second half goals to seal the win. In the 73rd minute, Gabrielle Bluford connected with Maribel Portillo who scored. Later on, Bluford picked up her second assist as her pass found the feet of Kaitlin Shea, who scored.
In the win, Monroe out shot CCRI, 29-1. They also had five corner kicks. The Mustangs now advance to the national tournament in Melbourne, Florida. The championship begins on Monday, November 16 and the host school will be Eastern Florida State College.
