NEW ROCHELLE, NY — The College of New Rochelle Womens Basketball team got off to a slow start against Notre Dame College (MD) in Sunday afternoon’s championship game of the 2015 Tip-Off Tournament. A 14-4 deficit after one, and a 39-18 halftime deficit proved too much to overcome for the Blue Angels, who ended up falling to the Gators 67-55.
The Blue Angels did have a third quarter rally. CNR closed the lead to nine points at the 2:37 mark on a jump shot by sophomore Hannah Cambel (Houston, TX), but that was not enough as the Gators regained their compsoure and hit a few key shots to regain a comfortable lead. Notre Dame pushed the lead back to 17 points midway through the 4th period on a jumper by Tournament MVP Zaria Comer.
Comer led Notre Dame with 16 points and six boards and two blocks. Teammate Justice Walrath added 16 points also, including 2-fro-2 from behind the arc. Justine Mundiay added 15 points for Notre Dame.
CNR was led by senior Jasmine Brandon (Jersey City, NJ) who recorded her second straight double-double with 17 points and a hame-high 15 boards. Cambel and freshmen Amirror Dixon (New Rochelle, NY) each added 10 points.
As a team CNR shot just under 30% from the field, while the Gators ended at 42%. Both teams struggled from the charity stripe, as both were right around 60%.
CNR will be back in action Tuesday night when they travel to City College for a non-conference match with the Beavers. Game time is set for 5:00pm.
