NEW ROCHELLE, NY — More than 20 students are facing possible disciplinary action after a massive melee broke out on a field outside New Rochelle High School.
Police were called to the scene but no arrests were made. There were unconfirmed reports that the fight may have been gang-related.
Reports from an area wire service had reported that knives were found during a search while the school was in lockdown and that one student suffered a laceration due to an attempted stabbing but reports from Breaking News Network were knocked down by school and police officials speaking off the record.
The incident occurred shortly before 11 a.m. Friday, during the first lunch period when many students go outside the school on the fields facing North Avenue. School staff including security officers quickly intervened and broke up the fight.
The school sent out a robocall to parents at about 12:20 p.m. advising them of the incident, reporting that no students were injured and announcing there would be a normal dismissal at the end of the school day. At the request of the New Rochelle Police Department, students were kept inside during the subsequent lunch periods.
At dismissal, shortly after 3 p.m., there was a heavy police prescense. There were no reports of further incidents.
