NEW ROCHELLE, NY — The College of New Rochelle Womens Basketball team watched as 16-point halftime lead evaporated in Monday night’s non-conference matchup against York College (NY). With just under 10 seconds to play, York’s Shauncia McClendon hit a bucket to give the Cardinal their first and only lead of the night – which ended up being the final 48-47.
CNR had a chance to win it with a shot inside the paint with around five ticks left, but York grabbed the rebound and the win to improve to 3-11. CNR drops its third straight and now sits at 6-10.
The Blue Angels looked like they were going to run away with the contest early on as they built a 31-16 halftime lead and dominated the boards, as well, 26-14. Senior Jasmine Brandon (Jersey City, NJ) had 12 points and 13 boards in the 1st half alone. Sophomore Caitlin Harrison (Bronx, NY) tallied four first half assists.
The second half things started to get interesting as York went on a 10-0 run midway through the period to make it 31-26 after a Samantha Bond triple. CNR rebuilt a nine point lead on a three by senior JaNasha King (Jersey City, NJ) with 41 ticks left. But, It was Bond who hit a highlight reel three-pointer from mid court as the buzzer sounded to shrink the CNR lead to 39-33.
York road that wave into the final frame, outscoring CNR 15-8 for the win.
Brandon finished with 16 points and 18 boards to lead CNR. Harrison added 11 boards and four assists. Both teams finished below 30% shooting on the night (CNR 18%, York 29%). Bond led York with 14 points.
CNR will return to action this Saturday with a road trip to Pine Manor College in Boston, MA. Game time is 1:00pm.
