NEW ROCHELLE, NY — Following a lost to Genesee College on Saturday, the Monroe College men’s basketball team rebounded with a 69-55 win over CCRI in the final day of the CCRI Invitational on Sunday in Warwick, Rhode Island. Three Mustangs reached double-figures in scoring.
Monroe had a strong first half to catapult themselves to victory over the Knights. The Mustangs led at the break, 31-19. Shackquiel Scott opened the game with two straight buckets to put Monroe up 4-0. At the 12:19 mark, Scott got a steal and finished at the other end with a dunk to make the score 12-6. Taquan Givens buried a three-pointer at the end of the half to push the lead to 12 and make the score 31-19 at the break.
In the second half, the lead for Monroe got as large as 23 points, courtesy of a Tyler Ancrum layup with 5:39 left. The Knights never threatened and Monroe went on to win, 69-55.
In the win, Scott had 12 points and 11 rebounds. Givens finished with ten points and posted a 7:1 assist/turnover ratio. Ancrum was a perfect 3-3 from the field and grabbed a game-best four steals. Lukas Landgren came off the bench to score a dozen.
The Monroe College men’s basketball team returns to action on Saturday, January 16, when they face Harcum in Bryn Mawr, Pennsylvania. The start time for the game is to be announced.
