WHITE PLAINS, NY — Westchester County Executive Robert P. Astorino today submitted a $2.75 million bond act to the Board of Legislators that, if approved, will complete the final phase of a 36-mile bike and foot path running the length of Westchester from Van Cortlandt Park in the Bronx to the Putnam County line in Somers/Mahopac. The final phase is a 0.6 mile section in the North County Trailway around an industrial area between Warehouse Lane and Main Street in Elmsford. If approved, it is estimated that the project, which first began in 1993, will be completed by the summer of 2017.
“Four years ago, I stood with former County Executives DelBello, O’Rourke and Spano in a show of bipartisanship to celebrate the completion of the last section of the South County Trailway, a 2-mile stretch in Yonkers. Sadly, two of those men are no longer with us, but I know they would be happy to know that the finish line is near. They share in this accomplishment as we all did our parts to move this ambitious project along,” said Astorino. “Westchester is known for our parks and the completion of this trailway will be the latest jewel to be enjoyed by residents and visitors alike.”
The county spent the past few years working to acquire easements from multiple property owners in order to make construction of the final piece of the trail possible.
At Somers, the North County Trailway connects to the Putnam Trailway that continues northeast for an additional 12 miles to Brewster.
