NEW ROCHELLE, NY — The Iona College men’s & women’s indoor track and field teams competed at the 2016 Gotham Cup at the Ocean Breeze Track & Field Complex on Friday afternoon. In the Gaels first meet since the start of the spring academic semester, both teams competed well and stood out strong in the competitive field.
On the men’s side, the Gaels took first and second in the 1000 meter run. Sophomore Liam Dee and junior Ross Wightman finished within a split second of each other with times of 2:27.49 and 2:27.50; Wightman’s time is a personal best in the event. In the mile run, senior Xavier King ran a 4:12.74 to take home fourth place.
On the women’s side there were several standout performers, led by sophomore Rachel Garn, who had a third place finish in the 1000 meter run. She finished with a time of 2:54.18, freshman Julia Kearley kicked off her indoor career competing alongside Garn, placing in sixth place finish with a time of 2:57.34.
In the mile run, sophomore Jessica Scheriff ran a personal best of 5:04.65 for seventh place.
The team of Garn, sophomores Natalie Holder, Kara McKenna, and Kearley in the 4×800 relay put together a sixth place finish with a time of 9:33.41
The Maroon & Gold will compete this upcoming weekend, Friday, Jan. 29 and Saturday, Jan. 30, as they head up to Boston for the John Thomas Terrier Classic.
