NEW ROCHELLE, NY — The College of New Rochelle Women’s Basketball team made a late surge in Thursday night’s non-conference contest at John Jay College. Facing a 9 point deficit and just over three minutes to play the Blue Angels closed the gap to two in the final seconds, but couldn’t tie it and settled for a 66-64 loss. The loss drops CNR to 8-12 on the season.
Senior Jasmine Brandon (Jersey City, NJ) scored with 19 seconds left to set the score at 66-64. After a pair of missed free throws by the Bloodhounds, CNR had a chance to win and tie in the finals seconds. Senior JaNasha King (Jersey City, NJ) attempted a three that missed, but sophomore Hannah Cambel (Houston, TX) rebounded the shot and was able to get off a shot as time expired, but it also wouldn’t go in.
Cambel led CNR with 20 points, which included four three-pointers. Brandon finished with 17 points and 12 boards. Sophomore Caitlin Harrison (Bronx, NY) had another solid night with 10 points and six boards.
As a team CNR had one of its best shooting nights of the season, hitting on 48% of its attempts, while holding John Jay to 35%. The difference was at the foul line, where John Jay was 13-for-21. CNR shot 1/3 the attempts from the charity stripe (7-for-7).
CNR returns to action on Saturday when they travel to an all important HVIAC game vs Albany Pharmacy. The winner will be the top seed in the upcoming HVIAC playoffs.
