NEW ROCHELLE, NY — At first glance, a tenth place finish out of 30 teams at the NJCAA National Championship seems a bit pedestrian, but for the Monroe men’s indoor track and field team, when you send only six runners to compete, a tenth place finish is quite impressive considering how few events the team competed and scored with just six competitors. Jaymes Dennison earned the feather in his cap with yet another victory in the 600 meter race, picking up the national title in the process.
Leading off on Friday for the men was the distance medley team. The grouping of Kipkoech Collins, Jaymes Dennison, Rajay Hinds and Mpho Makofane ran to a second-place finish with a time of 10:18.40.
Saturday was an even more impressive day led by sophomore, Jaymes Dennison. The Penns Grove, New Jersey, product defended the title he won as a freshman last season with ASA in the 600 meters. His national championship winning time of 1:19.21 was a new course record by over a second.
Makofane also had a busy day for the Mustangs, competing in the 800 and 1000 meters consecutively. He placed fourth in the 800 (1:54.35) and came in seventh in the 1000 with a mark of 2:34.75.
Finally, the 1600 meter relay team placed eighth overall, earning them All American honors in the process. The team consisted of Adrian Sheriff, Richardson Pierre, Dennison and Hinds.
The Monroe College outdoor track and field season is slated to get underway later in March.
