NEW ROCHELLE, NY –The No. 13 seed Iona College men’s basketball team – the 2016 MAAC Champions – will take on No. 4 Iowa State in the first round of the 2016 NCAA Championship at the Pepsi Center in Denver, CO on Thursday, March 17. Tip off is 2:00 pm ET, 12:00 pm local time on TBS.
Iowa State claimed a No. 4 seed after achieving a 21-11 overall mark, and 10-8 in Big XII conference play, tying for fifth place in the regular season. The Cyclones were ranked No. 21/19 in the AP/USA Today national Top 25 polls released prior to the Big XII Tournament.
The winner will takes on No. 5 Purdue / No. 12 Little Rock on Saturday (Mar. 19). The selection marks the 11th NCAA appearance for the Gaels (22-10, 16-4 MAAC) and first since back-to-back appearances in 2012 and 2013.
Iona was victorious in the two teams’ only meeting, earning an 89-72 win over then No. 23 Iowa State in the finale of the 2005 Cyclone Classic in Ames, IA. It was the last Gael win over a ranked opponent and fourth in program history.
