The collaboration is ideal for creating a fun and highly interactive summer of learning for children,” explained Dr. Candace Barriteau Phaire, Chair of the Graduate School Education Division and director of the program.

Young Explorers, children ages 3 to 5, will participate in group activities involving small group instruction for literacy and early number sense, music and movement, dramatic play, creative arts, and block building. Children ages 6 to 8 years old in the Explorers program will engage in group activities including social studies, STEM programs, literacy and math, nature, dramatic play, outdoor play and movement. The oldest campers, ages 8-10, will be part of the Discovery program which features hands-on STEM projects in Lego robotics and 3-D printing, literacy & mathematics enrichment, social studies and science, outdoor experiences, creative arts, and music and movement. The 3-D printers are funded by New Matter’s Educate and Inspire Grant.

Mentor teachers and CNR graduate students work collaboratively, creating developmentally appropriate curriculum based on the goals of the Common Core for each classroom. Designed to be engaging and enriching, the curriculum’s themes connect the learning across subject areas. Small group and individualized instruction is integrated into the daily program in order to insure the progress of each child
