NEW ROCHELLE, NY — Monroe College softball sophomore, Cassidy Wootten was the star at the plate for the Mustangs on Tuesday, as she combined for four hits in a doubleheader loss to County College of Morris. Monroe dropped the opener, 10-6 and lost the second game, 11-3, in six innings.
The Mustangs fell behind 6-0 after the top of the first in game one. Starter Tara Sasso didn’t survive the inning and was charged with five runs. She allowed just one hit though.
Monroe chipped away on the deficit scoring once in the first and second. Wooten led off the bottom of the first with an inside the park home run to the gap in left center. The run in the second came Joansley Espinal reached on a hit by pitch. She moved to second on a bunt single by Leidaly Garcia and scored on an RBI base hit from Miranda Diaz.
The Mustangs got as close as 6-3 when they added another run in the fourth. With two outs, Diaz reached on an infield hit. She moved to second on an error and hustled home on a single the other way by Yalitza Rodriguez.
Monroe made it 6-4 an inning later when Carly Coleman laced a one-out double and scored on an RBI single from Garcia. The Titans would score four more runs and go on to win 10-6. In game one, Diaz collected three hits while Garcia, Wootten and Coleman each had a pair.
Monroe took the lead in game two by scoring in the first. Wootten singled to center and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt. She later scored on a base hit to right center by Taylor White. From there, the Titans used three big innings to rack up 11 runs and lead 11-1 heading into the bottom of the sixth. Monroe scored twice, but the game ended there due to the eight-run-rule. Morris won 11-3.
The Monroe College softball team is now 4-6 on the season. They return to action on Friday, March 25, when they face Gloucester County College in a doubleheader from Sewell, New Jersey. The first pitch is slated for 3:00 PM.
