NEW ROCHELLE, NY — The Monroe College baseball team dropped a ten-inning match against ASA, 13-12, at Dutchess Stadium in Wappingers Falls on Wednesday. The game was the first of a five-game stretch. The loss dropped the Mustangs to 18-9 on the year.

A nine-run second inning and a run in the third catapulted the Avengers to a 10-3 lead. Monroe got lone runs in each of the first three innings on a Cam Crabbe ground out, a Ramger Iglesias sacrifice fly, and a balk by the ASA pitcher.

The Mustangs brought the score up to 10-6 when they added two runs in the fifth and another in the sixth. Crabbe was in the middle of the action again as he stole third and went in to score on a throwing error by the catcher. Later in the fifth, Michael Ramirez plated Endy Villalona with a sacrifice fly. The run in the sixth came in when Isaiah Torres walked and scored on an RBI double from Crabbe.

ASA scored twice in the bottom of the seventh, pushing the lead up to six. The Mustangs responded with six runs in their final two at-bats, evening the score to 12-12 and forcing extra innings.

Monroe scored four times in the eighth, bringing the score to 12-10. Alex De La Cruz opened with a single, and Iglesias doubled him home. From there, Torres walked, and he and Iglesias moved up a base on a balk by the pitcher. Iglesias scored the second run on a fielder’s choice off the bat of Endy Villalona where no out was recorded. Next, Ronald Jackson walked, but during the at-bat Torres scored on a wild pitch. The final run came when Lewis Gonzalez laced his fourth triple of the season, a team best. The Mustangs were within two runs of the Avengers heading into the ninth.

In the ninth, after a pop-up resulted in the first out of the inning, De La Cruz singled to center. Josue Perez then walked, and Torres ripped a base hit to left, loading the bases. A wild pitch scored De La Cruz and moved Perez and Torres up ninety feet. Crabbe then ripped a single in the hole and Perez came across with the tying run. ASA scored an unearned run in the tenth to win 13-12.

Crabbe led the Mustangs in the game with three hits, three RBIs, and a pair of runs. Iglesias also drove in a pair. On the mound, Edwin Gonzalez and Vincent Ruel combined to throw seven innings. Oliver Mailloux tossed the final two innings and was tagged with the loss.

The Monroe College baseball team will continue its series with ASA over the weekend. Thursday’s contest has been postponed, but the games on Friday and Saturday are still scheduled to take place.
