The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society’s Connecticut Westchester Hudson Valley Chapter has announced Savanna DiFatta, 8, of New Rochelle, as this year’s Girl of the Year.

Savannah DiFatta was diagnosed with blood cancer when she was 6. She recently finished her last chemotherapy treatment and is cancer free.

Although her recovery was lengthy, Savannah DiFatta remained positive and energetic throughout her illness, her mother, Jenn DiFatta said.

“At the time (she was diagnosed), we didn’t have any familiarity the illness,” Jenn DiFatta said. “We just hear cancer and think the worse. But Savanna in no way broke her stride.”

Two years later, Savanna DiFatta has beat cancer and is once again attending Webster Elementary School.

“I’m satisfied to be completed with yucky things,” Savanna DiFatta said about finishing her treatment.

The Connecticut Westchester Hudson Valley Chapter of LLS has also announced candidates for competing in the 2016 Man and Woman of the Year. The winners of The Man & Woman of the Year campaign will be announced on June 11 at a black tie Grand Finale Celebration at the Hyatt Regency in Old Greenwich, Conn.

The goal of the chapter is to raise $700,000 during the 10-week campaign. The organization’s mission is to raise money for lifesaving blood cancer research and raise awareness of LLS’s mission, which is to cure leukemia, lymphoma and myeloma, and to improve the quality of life for patients and their families, according to their website, www.lls.org.
