NEW ROCHELLE, NY — Today, Democratic Conference Leader Andrea Stewart-Cousins visited Albert Leonard Middle School in New Rochelle to congratulate Olivia Moxey, grade 6, for being selected by the State Senate as the 2016 Earth Day poster contest winner for the 35th Senate District. The New York State Senate sponsored the poster contest for children in grades K-6 and selected the winners independently. The theme of this year’s Earth Day celebration is “Reduce, Reuse, Recycle.”

“Olivia’s colorful and thoughtful message to recycle and ‘save the earth’ is one that we should all embrace,” said Senator Stewart-Cousins. “I congratulate Olivia and all of the participants in this year’s contest. I also commend the parents and teachers for their involvement and efforts to encourage our children to be creative and environmentally conscious.”

More than 120 students from schools in New Rochelle, White Plains and Yonkers, Ardsley, and Hastings-on-Hudson participated in this year’s poster contest to celebrate Earth Day. Each of the participants received a special certificate for helping to save our environment. Senator Stewart Stewart-Cousins concluded, “This is a fun and educational opportunity for our students to study about the serious challenges facing our environment and learn about the important role each of them and their families can play in making our communities and New York State a safer and cleaner place to live.”
