NEW ROCHELLE, NY — New Rochelle Celebrates Bike to Work Day
New Bike Share Program Launched with B3GM and E3 Think
The City of New Rochelle celebrated Bike to Work Day on May 20 with a pop up expo in the downtown and the announcement of a new bike share program in the fall. In partnership with P3GM and E3 Think, New Rochelle’s bike share will be the first such program in Westchester County.
“Our City is committed to sustainable transportation alternatives,” said New Rochelle Mayor Noam Bramson. “In April we celebrated Walk to Work day, and now in May- National Bike month- we’re proud to highlight our partnership with P3GM and E3 Think to make bicycling more accessible through our New Rochelle Bike Share program, the first of its kind in Westchester County. By taking a step back from cars and busses- even just once in a while- we can reduce emissions, traffic and parking congestion- and become healthier in the process. “
“The New Rochelle Bike-Share program is a key element in our quality-of-life toolbox.” said Development Commissioner Luiz Aragon. “Our focus citywide is to help New Rochelle evolve as a place where pedestrians, bikers and drivers share our streets healthily and safely”.
P3GM is a leading public-private smart city project developer and along with E3Think is spearheading a strategic effort to bring bike share and other mobility solutions to cities in the Northeast region. The program will consist of next generation technology, expecting to launch smart bikes and stations throughout the city. Unlike other traditional dock-dependent programs, this smart bike technology is less reliant on expensive docking stations. With GPS location capabilities on the bikes, users can find, rent, and return them using a mobile app. New Rochelle’s bike share will be privately funded and comes at no cost to the taxpayers,
“It is exciting to partner with a community-driven city like New Rochelle to develop a program for residents, students, and visitors,” said Pedro Cabassa, Operations Manager for P3GM. “We are working closely with local stakeholders to tailor the system’s design and to select sponsorship partners that are committed to bringing the first bike share program to Westchester County.”
Bike share programs provide mobility benefits to the community, improving city livability, economic competitiveness, health, and safety. Like New Rochelle, cities across the country are implementing bike share programs as part of a sustainable effort to help reduce congestion and CO2 emissions through an efficient and fun transportation alternative.
P3GM is engaging the community for feedback and evaluating potential sponsors for the Fall 2016 launch.
New Rochelle Bike to Work Day promotes healthy, sustainable forms of transportation and emphasizes the need to share the road for pedestrian and cyclist safety. The Bike to Work Day pop up expo also featured representatives from 511NY Rideshare, Montefiore New Rochelle, the Westchester County Department of Transportation and Danny’s Cycles bike store. Shop Rite provided bags with coupons from local merchants including Jungle Gym, Pinebrook Fitness, Estegia, Fish Run, and New Rochelle Tennis Club.
