PELHAM, NY — The Picture House Regional Film Center (TPH) is offering an array of dynamic film education classes for the fall 2016 semester. Under the guidance of Director of Education Francile Albright, the revamped and revitalized curriculum provides robust learning opportunities in acting, screenwriting, directing, and podcasting for students from kindergarten through high school.
“We have been working hard at The Picture House to re-invent and re-invest in our education programs and we’re excited to offer a number of new and diverse classes for all ages this fall,” said Albright. “Our programs have been designed to grow with students and will progress from beginning to advance levels so students can build their filmmaking skills from year to year. Plus, we’ve added new professional and award-winning instructors to our already fantastic teacher roster while making our prices much more affordable.”

All fall education sessions begin the week of September 20th and take place at The Picture House’s beautifully restored 1921 theater, 175 Wolfs Lane and the Satellite Film Lab, 253 Wolfs Lane in Pelham. Members at the Family Level and above receive a 10% discount on all education classes. Limited scholarships are available for qualified students. FALL 2016 EDUCATION CLASSES AT THE PICTURE HOUSE
On Camera Acting I – Screening Room
Tuesdays, September 20th – November 15th (No class October 4th)
Grades 3-5, 3:30-4:30 p.m.
Grades 6-8, 4:35-5:35 p.m.
Have a budding star in your family? This class is the perfect way to get comfortable in front of the camera and explore what it’s like to be an actor. Students will practice vocal and physical warm-ups, learn energy, presence and improvisation exercises and get an age appropriate introduction to on-camera acting techniques through monologues and scene work. Some memorization is required. Parents will receive a short video of excerpts of the students work 2 to 4 weeks after the last day of class. We create a safe and nurturing space for students to find their talent.
Improv/Sketch Comedy – Screening Room/Main Hall
Tuesdays, September 20 – May 29th (No class during Holidays/School Breaks)
Monthly First Friday performances beginning Friday, November 4th.
Grades 6-8, 6:00-7:00 p.m.
Grades 9-12, 7:05-8:05 p.m.
We are pleased to offer this fun and dynamic class for free this year! Through improvisation and sketch writing exercises students will build their confidence, imagination and collaboration skills with weekly classes and monthly, live performances. Evening Film Club – Satellite Film Lab
Wednesdays, September 21st – May 30th
Grades 9-12, 6:45- 8:30 p.m.
The popular Evening Film Club, presented in partnership with the Mathew S. Hisiger Film Foundation, is an intensive, year-long course held weekly from September – June at The Picture House. Offered free of charge on a first-come, first-serve basis, this class is for those high school students with a passion for film, filmmaking and the film industry. With special access to industry professionals, students not only have the opportunity to learn about everything the industry has to offer, but to make valuable connections, as well. As a final project, students work together with professional filmmakers and actors to produce, write, direct and shoot a short film during the summer.
Movie Making I – Make a Trailer – Screening Room
Thursdays, September 22nd – November 17th (No class week of 10/4)
Grades K-2, 3:30-4:30 p.m.
Grades 3-5, 4:35-5:35 p.m.
Grades 6-8, 5:40-6:40 p.m.
This class is for the student who loves stories – acting them out, writing, directing or filming them – they have ideas! A great introduction to the process of making a movie, students will learn about elements of storytelling, storyboarding, camera technique, movie trailers and film vocabulary. They will flex their imaginative and collaborative muscles to create the concept for a feature film, then act and film selected scenes together that will be edited into a trailer and sent to parents 2 to 4 weeks after the last class. A fun way to be a part of the Coming Attractions!
Podcasting I – Satellite Film Lab
Thursdays, September 22nd – November 17th (No class week of 10/4)
Grades 6-8, 6:30-7:30 p.m.
Grades 9-12, 7:35-8:35 p.m.
Is there a subject you love to talk about? Video games, sports, music…film? This class will help you learn all the basics of starting your own podcast. Interview techniques, brainstorming topics, knowing your audience and of course the equipment and technical know how you’ll need to begin your journey into podcasting. What are you waiting for?
