NEW ROCHELLE, NY –Animated cartoons and silent films that were created in New Rochelle will be the focus of a Family Film Fete, “Filmed in New Rochelle,” that will be presented by the New Rochelle Public Library during the second day of Arts Fest, Sunday, September 25th, from 1:30 pm – 4:00 pm. The free program, suitable for all ages, will take place in the library’s Ossie Davis Theater
The program will begin with a brief historical overview by Barbara Davis, city historian, followed by animated cartoons produced by the New Rochelle-based Terrytoons. Paul Terry first established his animation studio in 1934 in what was Westchester’s tallest skyscraper, the 12-story Schiff Building, now referred to as the “K” Building, at the intersection of Huguenot Street and North Avenue. Mighty Mouse, Heckle & Jeckle and Deputy Dawg were among the cast of characters created in the studio, which later moved to 38 Centre Avenue, and will be featured in the cartoons shown at the fete.
From 1909 to 1918, the Thanhouser Film Company produced silent movies in two different studios in New Rochelle locations. The nationally-famous, pioneering movie company produced over 1,000 films that were seen from coast to coast. Three 15-minute Thanhouser films will be shown: Cinderella, When the Studio Burned, and Old Jane and the Gaiety.
A donation of $2.00 for guest 12 years and older is suggested at the door. The program is made possible by the Friends of the New Rochelle Public Library.
