NEW ROCHELLE, NY — In its first event of the 2016 fall season, Iona College placed ninth at the Alex Lagowitz Memorial Invitational. Sophomore Paolo Matti was the top individual performer for the Gaels, ending the contest with a 229 (+13), tying him for 26th overall.
The Delaware Blue Hens won the event shooting 880 (+16). The Maroon & Gold shot a 927 (+63), beating out fellow MAAC school Canisius, who placed 11th of 12. Marc Oliveri of Delaware won the individual crown by shooting an impressive 214 (-2).
Matti shot a team beast 76 (+4) in his third round. Freshman Matt Mirocco finished his final round with a 79 (+7), tying him for 32nd overall with a total 231 (+15). Sophomore Devin Delisle rebounded well from a rough round two, ending his tournament with a +5 total of 77. Senior Brian Fitzpatrick shot 79 (+7) for all three rounds of the invitational. Rookie Oisin Deveruex ended his first ever collegiate competition with a personal best 77 (+5).
Mirocco ranked in the top 25 of golfers, scoring +4 on the par three holes over the course of the weekend. The rookie had the third highest total of birdies, earing nine circles on his scorecard.
Iona returns to competition of Saturday, Sept. 10 at Bethpage Red in Farmingdale, NY for the Doc Gimmler Intercollegiate.
