NEW ROCHELLE, NY — The Monroe College football team improved to 2-0 on Saturday, with a 30-7 win over Nassau Community College in their home opener. The game was played for an enthusiastic crowd who filled the stadium to capacity. Aaron Williams led the team with four touchdowns.

In what has become a familiar sight this season, the Monroe football team found success on the ground on offense and made timely plays on defense. Williams, in addition to his four scores, rushed for 78 yards, while Ryan Fulse finished with 162, marking the second-straight game that the Fort Meade, Florida native eclipsed the century mark.

The Mustangs opened the scoring, jumping out to a 7-0 advantage early in the first quarter. The team used a three-play, 53-yard drive to score after the defense forced the Lions to go three-and-out on their opening possession.

The second play in the drive saw Fulse cut back, make a couple of men miss, and outrun the defense before being stopped from behind on the Nassau one. The 52-yard scamper set up a Williams touchdown run on the next play.

The score went to 14-0 in the second quarter thanks to an 11-play drive for the Mustangs. The key play came on a fourth-and-seven, when Williams completed a pass to Jordan Castellanos for 22 yards. Williams scored his second touchdown of the half on a quarterback sneak two plays later. Monroe led 14-0 at the half.

Monroe gained possession of the ball with 13:06 left in the third quarter and commenced their third scoring drive of the game. Williams found Rakeem Langston for 26 yards to get the ball deep into Lions territory. Williams later scooted in from nine yards out to make the score 20-0. Nassau got on the board later in the third, and the Mustangs led 20-7 heading to the fourth quarter.

Williams scored his fourth touchdown of the contest in the fourth quarter, putting the game out of reach at 27-7. Finally, Jared Calhoun capped the scoring with a 22-yard field goal.

In the win, Monroe rushed for 264 yards and 4 touchdowns. Anthony Stubbs led the defense with six tackles. Darrius Stokes had one interception, and Jatece Wright had two more.

The Monroe College football team will return to action on Sunday, September 18th, against the Wagner College JV team in Staten Island. The kickoff is scheduled for 1:00 PM.
