Water Polo Haulted at Princeton Invitational

NEW ROCHELLE, NY — The Iona College men’s water polo program dropped three contests at the Princeton Invitational. The Gaels (3-4) fell to No. 10 UC San Diego, George Washington, and No. 20 Santa Clara.

The Skinny:

Game 1:

On Friday, the Maroon and Gold squared off against No. 10 UC San Diego, dropping the contest 21-4.

UC San Diego took off to a 10-1 lead when the first horn sounded and could not keep pace with the high-powered Tritans throughout the contest.

Sophomore Jason Hill led the Gaels with two goals, and junior Marc Stauble and freshman Quinn Lloyd finished off the scoring with one goal apiece.

Game 2:

The Saturday morning contest featured the Gaels and the George Washington Colonials. The Gaels were defeted by the score of 16-6.

The Gaels were held scoreless in the first half, finding themselves trailing 9-0 at the end of the first half. After conceding two goals to open the second half, Jason Hill put the Maroon and Gold on the board with six minutes remaining in the third quarter. From there, the Gaels kept pace with the Colonials, ultimately outscoring them 6-5 over the final 14 minutes.

Senior Anthony Zdanavicius started in goal, making five saves, and allowing 10 goals. Freshman Jorge Andres Torres took over in the second half, making eight saves and allowing six goals.

Quinn Lloyd finished the game with a team-high two goals, while adding one steal, and one kickout drawn.

Marc Stauble impressed with one goal, one assist, three steals, three kickouts drawn, and one block.

Sophomore Andres Guerra, Zach Roper , and Hill each found the back of the net once in the contest.

Game 3:

The Princeton Invitational concluded for the Gaels against No. 20 Santa Clara. The Maroon and Gold fell to the Broncos 16-9.

The Gaels got out in front in the first half, leading 6-4. Five goals by the Broncos in the third quarter led to a 11-7 deficit.

Marc Stauble and Hudson Grieve led the Gaels with two goals each. Stauble also collected three steals.

Matthew Rothman, Jason Hill, Andres Guerra, Dan Fleck, and Jonathan Hulbert each tallied one goal.

Zach Roper collected three assists, while also adding five shots.

Jorge Andres Torres made 14 saves, and allowed 15 goals.

Next Contest

The Maroon and Gold will be back in action next Saturday for the Connecticut College Invitational in New London, CT. The Gaels will take part in a triple-header beginning at 11:30 AM against Penn State Behrend. Iona will follow up with matches against Cal Lutheran at 2:45, and Connecticut College at 6:30 PM.
