NEW ROCHELLE, NY — The Monroe College women’s soccer team started the 2016 season following a pair of national Semi-Final appearances in the prior two seasons. They started this year’s campaign on a strong note, with a 9-0 shutout of Suffolk Community College in Selden, New York on Thursday. Maia Williams scored twice in the win.
Williams opened the scoring with a goal in the 17th minute. She added another early in the second half. Bruna Tavarez, an All-Region honoree last season, found the back of the net twice as well. Newcomer Gemma Pla opened her Monroe career by netting a pair of goals. The other scorers were Kathleen Silva, Gema Fernandez, and Andrea Rodriguez.
Leading the way in assists were a trio of players. Veronica Marques, Rodriguez, and Silva each had a pair of helpers. Tavares joined Meyah Romeo and Melissa Gonzalez with one assist each.
The defense limited Suffolk to just one shot for the whole game, helping Marta Alemany and Carmen Proffitt combine to earn the clean sheet.
The Monroe College women’s soccer team will return to action on Saturday, September 10th, in Warwick, Rhode Island for a noon kickoff against CCRI.
