NEW ROCHELLE, NY — The Monroe College football team improved to 3-0 on the season on Sunday with a 44-0 victory over the Wagner College JV team in Staten Island. Ryan Fulse led the rushing attack with 154 yards and a pair of touchdowns. He even scampered for 70 yards in one play. This was the third-straight game that Fulse surpassed the 100-yard plateau.
Monroe started with a 21-0 first quarter lead thanks to three rushing touchdowns. The Mustangs’ opening possession saw them run 43 yards in six plays. Fulse ran a touchdown in from 26 yards out on a fourth-down play. The Fort Meade, Florida native was just getting started. The next time he touched the ball was after the Monroe defense stopped the Seahawks on fourth down. After the change of possession, Fulse broke off a 70-yard touchdown sprint down the sidelines. The team led 14-0 less than six minutes into action.
Later in the first, Richard Jernigan recovered a fumble for the Mustangs and Monroe got the ball back deep in Wagner territory. On a third-and-seven, running back Kahlil Lewin broke a couple of tackles en route to a 27-yard score, his first touchdown of the season. Lewin finished the game with 87 yards on the ground.
Monroe pushed the lead to 31-0 with ten points in the second quarter. Placekicker Jared Calhoun made a 27-yard field goal on a drive that was keyed by a Lewin 41-yard scamper to the one. Later in the quarter, Aaron Williams dumped the ball to Lewin in the flat, and the running back took the pass in for a touchdown.
The opening drive of the second half saw Monroe gain 70 yards. Rakeem Langston accounted for most of them with two of his team-best five catches. The Mustangs missed a field goal at the end of the drive. Later in the quarter, Delton Rogers intercepted the ball near midfield and ran 56 yards for a touchdown, bringing the score to 38-0. He even carried a potential tackler seven yards on his back.
The fourth quarter featured another strong Mustangs runner, Steve Candelaria. The running back scored on a 60-yard carry and finished with 85 rushing yards in the game. Monroe won 44-0.
The Monroe College football team will return to action on Saturday, September 24th, against Valley Forge Military Academy in Wayne, Pennsylvania. The kickoff is slated for 2:00 PM.
