NEW YORK, NY — More than 80,000 adults in Westchester County do not have a high school equivalency diploma. HSE Connect! – a program of the Westchester Library System – helps adults who are ready to work towards their diploma. This program focuses on (1) building awareness and understanding of the options adults have for obtaining a high school equivalency diploma and (2) meeting the needs of students who need to improve their basic reading and math skills so they can be successful in preparatory classes and degree programs. Right now, we have adult students on a waiting list, and they need your help.
At monthly information sessions held throughout the county, we explain the three ways adult students can obtain a diploma, which includes a close look at the skills required to pass the Test Assessing Secondary Completion (TASC) (the exam formerly known as the GED). We review services that help students attain the skills needed to make progress in TASC classes or programs such as the National External Diploma Program (NEDP). Finally, we support these adult students in being effective independent learners by providing tools to assess their current abilities, offering instruction on the use of free self-study resources, and even providing free one-to-one tutoring that addresses student needs – from the three Rs to computer and library skills.
This past summer, several students who have never before passed the math or writing portions of the TASC exam were able to complete that test. Some students have seen their reading scores improve to the 9th grade level, which qualifies them for consideration by the NEDP program. We’ve guided students with diplomas from other countries towards the process for diploma evaluation and have helped young adults (and their parents) understand what it takes to get back on the path for a diploma. Each step forward is a celebration.
Tutors are the core of HSE Connect! Tutors offer informed, patient, one-to-one support to guide adult students in independent study or simply get them un-stuck in a subject area. A tutor is assigned to a student as part of a 6-12 week renewable commitment; they meet regularly at a mutually convenient time at a public library. Print and online study materials are provided by HSE Connect! Ongoing support is provided by a team of Program Coordinators who help to review progress, address challenges, and connect the student to additional supports as needed.
Tutors receive training over several evening sessions. Training covers the skills needed for a high school equivalency diploma, teaching tools, and strategies for working with adult learners. The time commitment for the tutor is generally two hours per week.
New tutor trainings are scheduled throughout the year. We’re looking for adults that can partner and encourage other adults on the path toward this important goal. Please consider making a difference – one subject at a time. To find out more, email TASC@wlsmail.org or call (914) 231-3264.
