NEW ROCHELLE, NY — The Monroe College Women’s Soccer team registered its fifth-straight win on Sunday, defeating Spartanburg Methodist, 6-3. With the victory, the team improved to 8-0-2 on the season.
The Mustangs’ spectacular performance in the first half cemented their victory. Monroe opened the scoring in the sixth minute, when Gemma Pla found Elysa Virella for a goal. Eight minutes later, Virella brought the score to 2-0 with a penalty kick. Monroe’s advantage grew to 3-0 when Virella connected with Brooke Smith on a goal. Spartanburg got on the board in the 24th minute to make the score 3-1. The Mustangs’ earned their fourth marker when Virella found Gabrielle Pereira for a goal, and their fifth when Andrea Rodriguez scored off another pass from Virella. Monroe led at the half, 5-1.
Virella earned a hat trick in the second half, when she scored off of an assist from Rodriguez. Virella had three goals and assisted on the three other Monroe markers. Spartanburg scored a couple of late goals, but the Mustangs won 6-3.
The Monroe College Women’s Soccer team will close out the road-trip on Monday, October 17th, against Louisburg College at 11:00 AM.
