NEW ROCHELLE, NY — The Monroe College volleyball team played a rare contest on Tuesday, when they welcomed an NCAA Division II school, Mercy College, into the MAC for a game. The Mustangs got the better of their NCAA counterparts, defeating the Mavericks in three sets, 25-22, 25-17 and 25-20.
Cristen Coryatt dominated play for Monroe, posting a double-double of 17 kills and 11 digs. Neysha Gonzalez had 17 digs and Carla Soufront totaled 25 assists.
Late in the first set, Monroe led 20-18 and secured the set by scoring two straight points. The Mustangs jumped out to an eight-point cushion in set two when a Coryatt kill made the score 13-5. Strong serving from Marissa Hackett and Kathrin Pasel helped Monroe take set two. The third set was as close as 20-19 until the Mustangs rattled off four consecutive points to take the match. The points came from a Coryatt kill and strong serving from Gabriella Nobrega.
The Monroe College volleyball team will compete in the Iowa Western Tournament in Council Bluffs, Iowa, over the weekend. They open play with Southeastern Community College on Friday, October 14, at 2:00 PM.
