NEW ROCHELLE, NY — The Monroe College Women’s Soccer team notched its fourth-straight shutout on Thursday by defeating CCBC Essex, 4-0. The Mustangs have outscored their opponents 18-0 during this shutout streak.
Elysa Virella continued her recent hot streak in Thursday’s game, during which she scored twice. The defender has scored four goals in her last two contests.
Virella opened the scoring in the 20th minute off a pass from Gemma Pla. The score increased to 2-0 in the 29th minute, when a pass from Veronica Marques found the foot of Andrea Rodriguez, who scored. Marques pushed the score to 3-0 in the 34th minute by calmly burying a penalty kick. The Mustangs added a second-half goal when Virella took a pass from Gabrielle Pereira and notched her second marker of the contest. Monroe won 4-0.
In the win, the Mustangs outshot the Knights, 30-4. They tried five corner kicks to Essex’s zero. Virella took seven shots in the game, while Pla totaled six.
The Monroe College women’s soccer team will return to action on Saturday, October 15th, against Howard Community College in Columbia, Maryland. The kickoff is slated for 11:00 AM.
