NEW ROCHELLE, NY — The Iona College golf program won the Maryland Eastern Shore Collegiate Challenge Tuesday afternoon. The Gaels finished the tournament tallying 910 strokes (+46), seven better than runner-up North Carolina Central. Iona secured the victory shooting a 313 (+22) in the final round.
Spots two through four on the individual leaderboard were owed by the Maroon & Gold. Sophomores Devin Delisle and Paolo Matti each tied for second with 226 (+10), and freshman Matt Mirocco came in fourth ending the tournament at +11.
Matti shot his best of the tournament on Tuesday, writing a final 74 (+2) in his scorebook. Delisle slipped in performance with an 83 (+11), but his strong play on the opening day held him atop the leaderboard. Mirocco matched his round two score going +5.
Seniors Alex Anderson and Brian Fitzpatrick finished tied for sixth at 231 (+15) and 22nd at 248 (+32), respectively.
The Maryland Eastern Shore Collegiate Challenge is the first tournament the Gaels have won as a team since the one day Monmouth Invitational back on Apr. 16, 2014.
Iona concludes the fall season with the Lehigh University Invitational at Saucon Valley Country Club in Bethlehem, PA on Friday, Oct. 21 and Saturday, Oct. 22.
