NEW ROCHELLE, NY — The Monroe College Women’s Basketball team improved to 3-1 at home on Tuesday with a 66-50 victory over Mohawk Valley Community College. The Mustangs are now 6-2 on the season and are more than halfway to last season’s win total (10).
Monroe took the lead from the start. A Jada Banks jumper with three minutes left to the quarter gave the Mustangs a 10-point lead, 20-10. The Mustangs ended the quarter with a 16-point lead after a three-pointer from Lisana Burnett brought the score to 31-15.
In the second quarter, the lead grew as high as 21 points on a Banks layup. Mohawk Valley hit a shot at the end of the quarter to cut the deficit to 13, and Monroe took a 42-29 lead into halftime.
Monroe returned to their 21-point lead several times in the third quarter, and the Hawks never threatened to come back. A Banks layup opened scoring in the fourth quarter and gave the Mustangs their largest lead at 23 points. The Mustangs went on to win, 66-50.
Four Monroe players reached double figures in scoring, with Banks and Camilla Kilinc leading the way with 15 points. Cristina Soriano had 11 points and 8 rebounds, and Shania Johnson scored 10 points.
The Monroe College Women’s Basketball team will return to action on Friday, December 2nd, against Harford Community College in Bel Air, Maryland. The start time is 6:00 PM.
