NEW ROCHELLE, NY — Earlier this month, Barnard school went purple to create more awareness about World Pancreatic Cancer Day.
The event held on Nov. 17 was organized by Tara Hernandez, a kindergarten teacher, in memory of her mom, Gigi Shanes-Hernandez. Hernandez’s mom was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer more than nine years ago, and she died in 2009.
Barnard teachers, the PTA, and students come together every year to wear purple and spread awareness about pancreatic cancer. In addition, every April, the Westchester Pancreatic Cancer Research Walk is held in memory of Gigi Shanes-Hernandez.
Dozens of Barnard School colleagues volunteer, walk, and donate to the walk. This year’s walk is scheduled for April 23 at Rye Playland. Over the last seven years, the walk has raised more than $2.3 million for pancreatic cancer research benefiting The Lustgarten Foundation.
Tara Hernandez says she is beyond appreciative of her colleagues’ dedication and the support of the Barnard community.
