NEW ROCHELLE, NY — Monroe College sophomore Shania Johnson scored a game-high 30 points in an 82-69 triumph over Niagara County Community College on Saturday. The win marked the sixth-straight victory for the Mustangs and improved their record to 17-5.
The Thunder Hawks pulled ahead, 4-3, two minutes into action. A Jada Banks jumper put Monroe ahead, 5-4. A 10-0 run, capped by a Fatoumata Coulibaly layup, put the Mustangs ahead, 15-4. Banks, Johnson, and Cristina Soriano all scored in the run. Monroe led 26-14 after the first quarter. Niagara County rallied in the second and got as close as three points, but the Mustangs led at the break, 40-36.
A Johnson three-pointer at the end of the third quarter made the score 66-49 for Monroe. The 17-point lead was the largest of the game. The Thunder Wolves never got the deficit into single digits, and the Mustangs went on to an 82-69 win.
Aneisha Lyons came off the bench to score 12 points and grab seven rebounds. Soriano had 12 points and eight rebounds. Johnson got four steals to complement her 30 points. The Mustangs shot 50% from the field in the game and 44% from the three-point range. They also grabbed 15 steals as a team.
The Monroe College Women’s Basketball team will face ASA College on the road on Tuesday.
