NEW ROCHELLE, NY — The College of New Rochelle men’s basketball team picked up a huge Hudson Valley Intercollegiate Athletic Conference victory thanks to a 93-86 win over SUNY-ESF in action on Saturday. The win puts New Rochelle in the driver’s seat for post-season play, with one league game remaining against Pratt Institute on Monday. CNR improves to 11-12 overall and 5-2 in the conference.
Freshmen Hunter Schenkel (Sayville, NY) led a five pronged attack with a game-high 24 points. Freshmen Matthew Dean (Marlboro, NJ) had 17 points and 14 boards in recording his fifth double-double of the season, while junior Jack Tisdale (Dayton, OH) and freshmen Elijah Harris (Flushing, NY) both had double-doubles as well. Tisdale had 16 points and 10 boards while Harris had 14 points and 10 rebounds. This marked the first time in program history that three players had a double double in the same game.
CNR out-rebounded the Might Oak 60-44 but made more turnovers (22) then SUNY ESF (16). CNR held a 49-48 halftime lead.
The Blue Angels now sit in a tie for 2nd place in the HVIAC with Vaughn. Both CNR and Vaughn play Pratt this week. If both teams beat Pratt, CNR will be the 3rd seed due to Vaughn owning the head to head tiebreaker. If CNR wins and Pratt beats Vaughn, CNR takes the 2nd seed. Regardless, CNR and Vaughn will face off in the semi-finals Saturday at 3:00pm.
