New Rochelle Police Issue Alert after Credit Card Skimmer Found at Local Gas Station

NEW ROCHELLE, NY — New Rochelle Police have issued an alert after a credit card skimmer was found at a local gas station.

The device was on a credit/debit card swipe machine on the counter inside the Sunoco Station at 71 Huguenot Street, not attached to a gas pump.   It was discovered on Feb 27th by a technician who was called to service the unit.

Skimming devices allow thieves to copy credit or debit card information. It is often difficult to determine that a device is attached to a payment terminal or ATM.

“Consumers should contact their banks or credit card companies by calling the number on the back of the card to obtain further information on how to protect your identity and your credit or debit card information,” said New Rochelle Police Captain Robert Gazzola.

One of many security suggestions are text alerts to your cellular phones whenever a charge is made. Credit/debit cards with “chips” are more secure than magnetic stripe cards.

Police urge residents to research online for ways to avoid becoming a victim of a skimming device.
