NEW ROCHELLE, NY — The Iona College Lacrosse program was downed by Brown 16-5 at Mazzella Field on Saturday afternoon. Junior Pamela Giordano led Iona with three goals on seven shots. Senior Erin Pugh and sophomore Maureen Murphy each found the back of the net in the defeat. Pugh also grabbed a game-high eight ground balls and caused four turnovers.

In net, Shannon McCaffrey started the game, and was relieved by freshman Samantha Tyo, who allowed nine goals and stopped six Bears shots.

As a team, the Gaels took 26 shots and grabbed 22 ground balls. The Maroon & Gold had the advantage in draw controls, 14-9 with junior Jenna Tolzmann collecting six.

In the first half, Giordano stopped an early 2-0 run by the Bears to cut the deficit to one. Brown rallied off four unanswered goals before Giordano and Murphy connected to cut the Bears lead to 6-3. The Gaels went into halftime trailing 9-3.

Iona tallied the first score of the second frame, as Giordano completed a hat trick to trim the deficit to five. The Brown offense was too much for Iona to handle, as they scored the next three before Pugh scored on a free-possession shot; their last of the game. The Bears scored the final four goals over a seven minute span to down the Maroon & Gold.

The Gaels will complete non-conference play on Sunday, Mar. 19 at La Salle.
