NEW ROCHELLE, NY — The Monroe College Baseball team won its home opener against Rockland Community College on Thursday in five innings, 10-0. The Mustangs are 2-0 on the year.
The Mustangs scored six times in the second inning. Troy Davern led off with a single. Lewis Gonzalez was hit by a pitch. After that, Andy Karlan blasted a homerun to left center and Monroe led 3-0. Marcus Espinal followed with a single and came home two batters later following an RBI triple from Wayne Roberts. Isaiah Torres walked and Roberts came in on a wild pitch. Finally, Torres scored on a Michael Crispino triple.
The Mustangs added three runs in the fourth to make the score 9-0. Davern scored Roberts on an RBI single and Espinal brought in Davern and Crispino on a base hit. The tenth run came on a walk by Shadrach Meulens with bases loaded. Monroe won 10-0 in five innings due to the “ten-run rule.”
The Mustangs gave a number of pitchers time on the mound. Manuel Pizaro got the start. Xavier Bilodeau pitched the second inning and got credit for the win. Ramon Disla struck out a pair in his inning of work. Fernando Figueroa and Francisco Urena each threw a scoreless inning.
Espinal went 3-3 with 2 RBI. Karlan had a homer and drove in three. Roberts and Davern had two hits apiece.
The Monroe College Baseball team returns to action on Monday, March 13, when they face Genesee CC in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina at 6:00 PM.
