NEW ROCHELLE, NY — The Iona College golf program finished tied for 13th in its first spring competition at the Cape Fear National Intercollegiate held at the Cape Fear Country Club. After three rounds the Gaels tallied 958 (+94); their best score came in the final third round at 311.
Sophomore Devin Delisle was the program’s top individual competitor with a score of 228 (+12). He placed 24th, using a second round score of 71 (-1) to perch himself among the upper tier of the student-athletes competing.
Senior Alex Anderson and fellow second-year player Paolo Matti each tied for 67th; Matti moving up 14 spots on the leaderboard with a 74 (+2) in his final round. Freshman Matt Mirocco shot 246 (+30), and senior Brian Pitzpatrick registered a 247 (+31).
The Gaels had two eagles on the weekend, tying for first among the schools competing. Both came from underclassmen in Matti and Delisle. Iona ranked last in birdies made with 15; Delisle led the team with six himself. Anderson and Matti each had four.
Iona returns to action on Friday, March 31 at the 2017 Manor Intercollegiate in Farmville, VA at the Manor Golf Course. The event runs through Sunday, April 2.
