NEW ROCHELLE, NY — The Monroe College Baseball team fell to ASA College in a doubleheader held over the weekend by scores of 7-4 and 6-5. The team is now 12-15 for the year.
Game one saw Antonio Frias get the start for Monroe. The Panamanian freshman entered the game looking to improve to 2-3 on the year. The southpaw pitched just over three innings, striking out six and surrendering just one earned run.
The Mustangs took a 1-0 lead in the first inning after Michael Crispino reached third base on a dropped fly ball. He scored on an RBI groundout from Troy Davern, who drove in a pair in the game. ASA responded with a trio of runs in the second to grab a 3-1 lead. They added two more in the fourth and led 5-1 heading into the fifth.
The Mustangs closed ASA’s lead in the fifth. Edgardo Bernard doubled to left. Dawy Lebron was hit by a pitch. Juan Torres ripped a base hit that brought in Bernard and moved Lebron to third, enabling him to advance to second on the throw to third. Isaiah Torres walked to load the bases. Crispino brought home a run on a fielder’s choice and Davern plated another with a hit. The Mustangs scored three times and trailed 5-4 heading into the sixth. The Avengers added two runs late and won 7-4.
Game two saw Monroe fall behind 5-0 after four innings. They got a run back in the fifth when Adonis Garcia singled and later scored on an RBI groundout from Edward Nunez. The Mustangs tied the game an inning later with a four-run sixth.
Trailing 5-1, Isaiah Torres walked and Crispino followed with a double that put runners on second and third. Monroe got three unearned runs and another on a wild pitch to tie the score at 5-5. ASA snuck in a run in the top of the ninth to prevail, 6-5.
In game two, Xavier Bilodeau threw five innings of relief, allowed one run on three hits and fanned six.
The Monroe College baseball team returns to action on Monday, April 17, when they host Westchester CC at 3:30 PM.
