NEW ROCHELLE, NY — A pair of home runs from Michael Crispino and Adonis Garcia helped the Monroe College Baseball team defeat Westchester Community College, 12-1, on Monday. Monroe used a seven-run second inning to pull away from the Vikings.
Westchester struck first, getting a run off of Monroe starter Joel Urena, in the first inning. A leadoff double, a single, and a sacrifice fly accounted for the Westchester run. Urena settled down after that, not allowing another run and striking out six in five innings of work. He earned the win and improved to 2-1 on the year.
The Mustangs came from behind in the bottom of the first, after Wayne Roberts reached on a bunt single. Two batters later, Troy Davern blasted a triple to the wall in right field, easily scoring Roberts and tying the game at 1-1. The score went to 2-1 when Davern tagged and scored on a Shadrach Meulens sacrifice fly.
Monroe put the game away an inning later with seven runs in the second. Andy Karlan singled and stole second. Juan Torres walked, and Dawy Lebron reached on an error. Carlos Torres brought the score to 3-1 with a bases-loaded walk. After a strikeout, Crispino blasted a grand slam over the wall in left. Monroe led, 7-1. Later in the frame, Davern walked and Isaiah Torres singled. From there, Karlan’s second at-bat of the inning resulted in a two-RBI double into the left field corner, stretching the lead to 9-1.
Marcus Espinal made the score 10-1 for Monroe with an RBI double in the fifth, after Carlos Torres reached on an error. An inning later, the Mustangs won via the ten-run-rule. Meulens led off the sixth and was hit by a pitch. After a pitching change, Adonis Garcia blasted a walk-off home run onto Fifth Avenue beyond the left field wall. Monroe won, 12-1.
The team improved to 13-15 on the season with the win. They will face Brookdale Community College at 3:30 on Tuesday in Lincroft, New Jersey.
