NEW ROCHELLE, NY — The Monroe College Softball team faced tough competition over the weekend, falling to Mercer County College and Brookdale Community College in doubleheaders. They were ahead in their second game against the latter, 7-6, when the umpire suspended the game.
Mercer County proved a strong competitor as they beat the Mustangs 12-0 in their first game and 4-1 in the second. Kylie Bitz struck out six in game two. She allowed just three earned runs. Gabrielle Placencia hit a solo homerun to account for the Mustangs only run in the doubleheader.
Game one against Brookdale on Friday went to the Jersey Blues, 12-3, in five innings. Monroe scored three times in the bottom of the fourth. Yeisy Cruz hit a check swing dribbler to the pitcher that she beat out for a hit. Placencia sent her home with a triple. Later, Toni Harris made the score 10-3 when she blasted a two-run homer to left.
Monroe was ahead in game two, 7-6, heading into the seventh, when the umpires suspended the game due because Monroe ran out of available players. Brooke Boechler was 3-3, while Crystal Estrada, Breanna Kuhner and Selena Aguirre each had a pair of hits.
The Monroe College Softball team has a winning record of 12-11 this season. They return to action on Tuesday, April 18, when they travel to Pemberton, NJ for a doubleheader with Burlington County CC. The first pitch is slated for 3:00 PM.
