WHITE PLAINS, NY — The Hudson Valley is filled with rich history and the warmer months are the perfect time to explore.

“Springtime has arrived and there’s no better place to get outdoors and explore than Westchester County,” said Westchester County Executive Robert P. Astorino. “With hundreds of miles of hiking and biking trails, and historic sites dating back to the American Revolution, we have exactly what you need to take the family on a weekend adventure.”

Hike, Bike & Explore

Spring is the perfect time to explore one of the beautiful county trails in the region.  Visitors can enjoy the picturesque scenery and unspoiled parks, picnic spots, historic sites and nature preserves unfettered by crowds. Enjoy an active day or getaway, whether you choose hiking, running, biking, or just a leisurely stroll among nature’s beauty. Trail details include distances, access points, historical notes, sites of interest and parking locations, if available, near the trails’ main access points. Celebrate spring! From fiber to fashion, the Sheep to Shawl festival at Philipsburg Manor celebrates all things wooly sheep! Visitors are invited to explore each step in the process of turning wool into cloth using 18th-century techniques.

Hands-on activities include dyeing wool and weaving, and crafts for children, including sewing with wool and creating a picture from sheep or alpaca wool (NEW!). For tickets and information, visit http://www.hudsonvalley.org/events/sheep-shawl

Kykuit, The Rockefeller Estate, opens May 4th. Kykuit is a preeminent Hudson Valley landmark. For architecture, remarkable gardens, art, history, and spectacular scenery, a trip to Kykuit is simply amazing. This hilltop paradise was home to four generations of the Rockefeller family, beginning with the philanthropist John D. Rockefeller, founder of Standard Oil. His business acumen made him, in his day, the richest man in America. Now a historic site of the National Trust for Historic Preservation, this extraordinary landmark has been continuously and meticulously maintained for more than 100 years. A visit to Sunnyside is an enchanted adventure in a romantic landscape and a much-loved riverside home that has been charming visitors for generations.

Hear about Washington Irving’s storied past and how he came to be America’s first internationally famous author, best remembered now for The Legend of Sleepy Hollow and other short stories. His characters, from Brom Bones and Ichabod Crane to the mysterious Headless Horseman and the comic Rip Van Winkle, are icons in American culture. Even Johnny Depp has added to their global renown.

A gently curved path leads to gorgeous views of the Hudson River and reveals the allure of Sunnyside’s unique design, its intimate setting, its bucolic grounds, and its association with a beloved man of letters. The season opens May 3rd and tickets are on sale now. Visit http://www.hudsonvalley.org/historic-sites/washington-irvings-sunnyside  for more information.
