NEW ROCHELLE, NY — Despite having a depleted roster due to finals, the Monroe College Baseball team came home from Garden City with an 11-1 eight-inning victory over Nassau on Wednesday. The team is now 12-13 on the season.
Monroe took a 2-0 lead with a pair of runs in the second. Troy Davern reached on a single. He moved to second on an error and scored on an RBI double from Shadrach Meulens. Meulens later scored on an error.
The Mustangs added three more runs in the fifth. Edgardo Bernard singled to center, then Edward Nunez and Michael Crispino both walked. Bernard scored on a passed ball. Davern cleared the bases with a two-RBI double that plated Nunez and Crispino, bringing the score to 5-0.
Both teams scored in the eighth inning. Monroe found the plate six times in their half of the frame. Meulens led off with a triple. Andy Karlan and Dawy Lebron both walked. With the bases loaded, Bernard drove in Meulens and Karlan with a single and the Mustangs led, 7-0. Marcus Espinal followed with a bases-clearing triple and made the score 9-0. He later scored on a Nunez three-bagger. Crispino drove in the final run with a single that brought in Nunez and stretched the lead to 11-0.
Nassau managed a run in the bottom of the eighth, bringing the score to 11-1, but the game ended via the ten-run-rule. Harry Colon got the start and tossed three scoreless innings. Joel Urena relieved him and earned the victory, improving to 2-1 on the year. Francisco Urena and Nunez closed out the pitching for the Mustangs.
The Monroe College Baseball team will return to action on Saturday, April 15th, hosting ASA College in a 4:00 PM doubleheader.
