NEW ROCHELLE, NY — A five-run seventh inning turned an 8-6 disadvantage into the Monroe College Baseball team’s third-straight win, an 11-9 victory over the County College of Morris on Monday. Wayne Roberts led the Mustangs with three hits.
The Mustangs took a 5-0 lead in the first inning, with the first seven batters all reaching base. Roberts led off the game with a double. He scored the first run on a Michael Crispino single. An Isaiah Torres single and a Shadrach Meulens walk loaded the bases with no outs. Next, Marcus Espinal, who was 5-9 in his last three games, ripped an RBI single to left that scored Crispino. With the bases still loaded, Adonis Garcia reached on an error by the shortstop, plating Torres with the third run. Andy Karlan reached on a fielder’s choice that brought home two and forced Garcia at second.
The Titans scored once in the bottom of the first, then seven more times in the next three innings to lead 8-6. Monroe got a run in the fourth when Karlan reached on an error, stole second, and scored on a Carlos Torres base hit.
The Mustangs scored five times in the seventh to take the lead for good. Carlos Torres and Roberts reached on consecutive singles. Crispino loaded the bases with a bunt single. Two batters later, Espinal singled home Roberts and Crispino and tied the game at 8-8. Isaiah Torres put Monroe up 9-8 when he scored on a wild pitch after reaching on a fielder’s choice. Adonis Garcia plated the tenth run with an RBI single, and Karlan capped the scoring by bringing him in on a base hit.
Monroe went on to win, 11-9. Jason Alvarez pitched three innings of relief to earn the win and improve to 4-0. Jose Sierra recorded the save. The team improved to 18-19 overall, and will return to action on Wednesday, May 3rd, against Sullivan County at 4:00 PM.
