NEW ROCHELLE, NY — A pair of Binghamton goals within 43 seconds of each other in the first half put Iona behind the eight-ball as the Bearcats hung on for a 2-0 victory over the Maroon & Gold. Senior goaltender Tiffany Martinez made eight saves in the defeat.
Bearcat freshman Dora Hayes scored her first collegiate goal at 14:13 from just outside the eighteen-yard box. Just moments later at 14:56, redshirt junior Kayla Saager netted her fourth goal of the season from 30 yards out.
Graduate Erika Flowers had Iona’s best chance to score in the game; late in the first half, sophomore Mariah Elsenheimer drove down the left side and put a cross on target near the far post. Flowers came within inches of cutting the Bearcats deficit to just one.
Junior Mariana Jaramillo had a team-high four shots and two shots on goal. Sophomore Treloara Harrison, senior Julia Campagna and sophomore Amber Crispin each had one shot on net. In her first start since 2015, Flowers played 90 minutes, firing two scoring chances.
Iona hosts Holy Cross on Friday, Sept. 8 at 3 PM. The game will be broadcasted live on ESPN3.
