NEW ROCHELLE, NY — Residents in the United States under DACA permission set to expire by March 5 have less than a week to apply for a two-year extension.
The City School District of New Rochelle is partnering with the City of New Rochelle to make sure affected residents are aware that they must apply for the extension from U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services by Oct. 5.
The city and school district are distributing a flier with information on DACA, the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program, and on where to get help. The flier will be handed out at Back-to-School nights and other events and has been posted on both partners’ websites. You can find it on the district website, www.nred.org.
DACA was started in 2012 by President Obama to protect undocumented residents from deportation if they came to the United States as children. On Sept. 5, President Trump ended the program, but with a six-month delay. Those who have not received DACA protection cannot apply. Residents whose DACA permission extends beyond March 5, 2018, cannot apply for an extension.
Residents who applied for DACA permission by Sept. 5 will still have their applications processed.
