WHITE PLAINS, NY — Chess enthusiasts of all ages and abilities are invited to join instructors and students from the National Scholastic Chess Foundation for Chess in the Park being held Monday, October 9 from 1 to 4 pm at the Ruby Dee Park at 1 Library Plaza in New Rochelle.

The event will feature a simultaneous exhibition by National Master Ricardo Perez Billinghurst, a chess lecture from FIDE Master Sunil Weeramantry, open play with the NSCF instructors and presentations by invited guests include New Rochelle Mayor Noam Bramson and Westchester County Legislator James Maisano. Mark Hegenaeur, an ESL teacher at Columbus Elementary School, will receive the 2017 Scholastic Service Award in recognition of his 20th anniversary inspiring public school students by teaching chess.

The National Scholastic Chess Foundation is an education non-profit based in White Plains NY that has been teaching chess both in the curriculum and in after school programs in New Rochelle schools since 1990. While the NSCF has produced over 150 national scholastic champions in both individual and team competition, the focus of its school programs is to teach critical thinking and problem solving skills that can be applied to any pursuit in life. Chess helps children improve concentration and self-discipline leading to better test scores in math, reading, sciences and social studies. In addition to direct instruction and producing tournaments, the NSCF delivers teacher training programs to encourage greater adoption of chess in schools across the United States.

The event on Columbus Day is free and open to all. For additional information, please visit www.nscfchess.org
