PELHAM, NY — Coastal Living magazine, The Picture House Regional Film Center, and the Environmental Coalition of the Pelhams (EcoPel) are proud to present a special showing of The Smog of the Sea, singer-songwriter Jack Johnson’s new documentary about plastic pollution in the oceans.
The screening will take place on Thursday, Oct. 12th at 7:30 p.m. at The Picture House Regional Film Center, 175 Wolfs Lane, Pelham, NY, and is open to all.
The event will also celebrate the Ocean Heroes, a group of scientists, advocates, visionaries, and deep-sea legends who tirelessly fight to protect our seas from peril. Identified with Jack Johnson’s help, the Ocean Heroes are featured in Coastal Living’s November issue.
Prior to the film, audience members will preview the works and words of the Ocean Heroes plus they’ll be introduced to a new student advocacy group, Pelham Eliminates Plastics (PEP), that aims to reduce single-use plastics locally, including plastic bags, bottles, straws, and coffee lids.
After the screening, Hillary Hauser, founder and director of Heal the Ocean, the California-based citizen action group responsible for cleaning up the previously toxic waters along the Santa Barbara coastline, will speak about her organization’s work as it pertains to the movie and the Ocean Heroes.
Co-sponsor EcoPel is providing each guest with a reusable cotton tote bag that includes a free copy of the November issue of Coastal Living, Jack Johnson branded bamboo serving sets, Kleen Kanteen reusable water bottles, Grime Boss biodegradable wipes, and more.
The Smog of the Sea chronicles a one-week journey through the remote waters of the Sargasso Sea. Marine scientist Marcus Eriksen invited an unusual crew to help him assess the fate of plastic waste in the world’s oceans: musician Jack Johnson, renowned surfers Keith and Dan Malloy, spear fisherwoman Kimi Werner, and bodysurfer Mark Cunningham.
“It’s easy to think that the ocean is so vast it can take care of itself,” Johnson says. “But that’s really not the case anymore, as I’ve come to learn when I travel and talk with these experts. When the expeditions are completed, or when we speak away from the cameras, our conversation continues.”
Tickets to the film event are $15 for general admission and $12 for students, seniors, and members. Tickets are available through The Picture House website or at the box office, 175 Wolfs Lane, Pelham, NY 10803.
