Latimer Repeatedly Drove Unregistered Jeep Despite Claims to the Contrary

NEW ROCHELLE, NY — State Senator George Latimer has lied repeatedly about the registration status of his personal vehicle, a 2015 Jeep, and his illegal use of an unregistered vehicle.

The matter first came to light after Talk of the Sound reported on a previously undisclosed car crash over the summer in New Rochelle and discovered that Latimer’s vehicle registration had been suspended the day after the collision.

The two-car collision at the intersection of Wilmot Road and Grand Boulevard on July 21st, injured two including Latimer when Latimer was driving a vehicle owned by an employee. Latimer’s vehicle registration was suspended on July 22 by the New York State Department of Motor Vehicle after a suspension notice was filed by the Yonkers Parking Violations Bureau.

Talk of the Sound has since reported that the married Latimer appears to have run the red light at Wilmot Road and Grand Boulevard on the way to the home of his mistress, Judge Susan Kettner, and that Latimer skipped a series of budget votes last April to accompany her on a trip to London.

Talk of the Sound has filed a series of Freedom of Information requests in Yonkers, White Plains, Port Chester, Town of Mamaroneck and Village of Mamaroneck for parking tickets.

The first fulfillment of those FOIL requests came from White Plains.

On April 28, 2013 Latimer received a $50.00 violation for Parked Without Valid Registration. At the time, the Latimer’s Jeep’s registration expired on April 1, 2013.

On June 20, 2016 Latimer was issued a $50.00 violation for Expired Inspection Under 60 Days.

On April 19, 2017, Latimer was issued a $50.00 violation for Parked Without Valid Registration. At the time, the Latimer’s Jeep’s registration expired on April 1, 2017.

On April 27, 2017, Latimer was issued a $50.00 violation for Parked Without Valid Registration. At the time, the Latimer’s Jeep’s registration expired on April 1, 2017.

On May 11, 2017, Latimer was issued a $50.00 violation for Parked Without Valid Registration. At the time, the Latimer’s Jeep’s registration expired on April 1, 2017.

On October 10, 2017, Latimer was issued a $50.00 violation for Parked Without Valid Registration. At the time, the Latimer’s Jeep’s registration expired on April 1, 2017.

On October 12, 2017, Latimer was issued a $50.00 violation for Parked Without Valid Registration. At the time, the Latimer’s Jeep’s registration expired on April 1, 2017.

On October 20, 2017, Latimer was issued a $50.00 violation for Parked Without Valid Registration. At the time, the Latimer’s Jeep’s registration expired on April 1, 2017.

The Journal News is reporting that Latimer’s Jeep was booted in October and between what he has self-reported and Information obtained under FOIL, Latimer has paid $2,200 in fines and fees in parking tickets.

Last Friday, the Journal News reported that Latimer said he “did not re-register the 2014 Jeep immediately after paying the tickets because the car’s transmission had to be fixed. He insisted the car is not being used until he registers it.”

We now know this was a lie. Latimer only just paid some of the outstanding parking tickets but drove the vehicle at least on October 10, October 12, and October 20. The Astorino campaign released an audio of Latimer stating he drive his personal vehicle to a candidate forum in Somers, NY on September 27. The Journal News reported Latimer drove the Jeep into downtown Rye to get coffee on October 27. Whether the Jeep’s transmission was being repaired at some point it was running over the past two months.

The vehicle registration of Latimer’s Jeep expired on April 1, 2017.

The Journal News reported “the dealer kept the car until August when Latimer reached an agreement on buying it.”

White Plains parking violation records show otherwise, Latimer received 5 parking tickets between April 1, 2017 and June 1, 2017; three of those tickets are for parking an unregistered vehicle on April 19 (Court Street), April 27 (Waller Maple), and May 11 (Mitchell Place) in locations not in the immediate vicinity of the car dealership. The vehicle was also operational during this period.

The Journal News reported Latimer said he “owed money because he had exceeded the mileage and there was a dent”. Lease agreements typically have a damage forgiveness policy up to $1,000 raising questions about whether Latimer was in another collision.

Latimer told The Journal News “He did not worry immediately about the registration, he said, because the car had a transmission problem and went back to the dealer.”

We now know this statement is misleading, whether he was worried or not, Latimer was unable to re-register the vehicle due to unpaid parking tickets in Mamaroneck.

Latimer said “he might have missed a suspension notice earlier from the state Department of Motor Vehicles.”

Under Yonkers Parking Violations Bureau policy, Latimer would have receive four notices of pending suspension plus one from the DMV and at least one from Mamaroneck. In addition, he received 6 violation notices from White Plains for a suspended registration — at least 12 and likely more.

The Journal News reported “(Latimer) insists the Jeep has not been driven since April, except for test drives, and that it remains at his house until he can register it.” Again, Latimer received 6 violation notices for parking an unregistered vehicle in just White Plains, over the past 6 months.

On Friday morning, the Journal News caught Latimer red-handed. Latimer denied driving the vehicle “for transportation”, claiming he was driving the car to prevent engine damage. Latimer then admitted to driving the car into downtown Rye to get coffee.

“If it just sits there, it could damage the car,” Latimer told the Journal News. ”I’m not taking it out for a joyride. It’s not being used for transportation purposes.”

State law makes no such distinction.

“A vehicle that is not properly registered cannot be legally driven on New York’s roadways,” said Tim O’Brien, a DMV spokesman told the Journal News.
