NEW ROCHELLE, NY — In addition to the members of the Iona College cross country program at the NCAA Championship this morning, members of the both the men’s and women’s team also competed at the 2017 ECAC/IC4A Championships at Van Cortlandt Park. The women’s team earned sixth place in the ECAC Championship while the men’s team landed in 23rd at the IC4A Championship.
Freshman Sophie Murphy led the effort for the Gaels with a fourth place showing of 18:02.0 on the 5k course, averaging a 3:36.4 kilometer pace. Jessica Scheriff put together a 16th place showing behind a time of 18:21.5 while Daniele Martino finished in 18:45.1 for 39th place.
Kaitlyn Ohrtman and Hannah Molloy finished back-to-back and nearly at the same time in 74th and 75th place with respective times of 19:19.1 and 19:19.7. Kara McKenna added an 89th place showing with a time of 19:32.6. Shannon O’Hehir concluded the scoring for the Maroon & Gold in 110th place, recording a 19:48.4 time.
James Madison earned a second straight ECAC title, tallying 60 points to finish ahead of 73 points by second place Richmond. Fellow MAAC representative Marist earned fourth place with a team score of 162, ahead of Iona in sixth with 204.
On the men’s side of the IC4A Championship, Christian Alberico ran an average of 3:24.1 throughout the 8k course to accumulate a time of 27:22.0 for 108th place to lead the Gaels. Daniel Galvin ran in at 27:34.7 for 127th while Brian Warsh came in 155th at 28:14.3.
Temple earned the IC4A Championship crown with a team score of 43 points as Columbia came in second with 112 points. MAAC rival Manhattan earned fifth place at a team score of 199.
