NEW ROCHELLE, NY — Buses bringing students to Jefferson Elementary School no longer stop cars along Weyman Avenue, thanks to a drop-off lane that improves safety and allows a smooth traffic flow.
Part of the $106.5 million bond construction, the new drop-off area is a perfect example of a modest change making a big difference. Five buses can fit in the lane, shifting them off of the busy by-way.
“It improves traffic flow because buses are no longer blocking traffic,” said Director of Facilities Carl Thurnau. “The students are dropped off on the sidewalk directly in front of the building.”
Workers created a lane parallel to Weyman Avenue by tearing up and replacing sidewalk and pavement. They also added long-lasting granite curbs with curb cuts, which improve accessibility. The work was completed in December.
With the drop-off area moved off the street, cars no longer need to stop and wait on Weyman Avenue when the buses are stopped to pick up or drop off children.
“The new drop-off area allows the children to be safe and enables traffic to keep moving,” said Principal Kimmerly Nieves.
