NEW ROCHELLE, NY — The men’s basketball team found themselves in a familiar spot on Sunday: playing in the conference championship game versus Berkeley College. Unfortunately for the Blue Angels, there was too much similarity to last year’s showdown as they lost by the score of 93-82.
The game started with Berkeley scoring the first five points before two Kobe Telford (Brooklyn, NY) free-throws got New Rochelle going. The teams took turns exchanging baskets but the Blue Angels found themselves ahead at the halfway point, due largely in part to the efforts of Anthony Sylvester Jr (Queens, NY). The freshman scored 13 of his team high 24 points in the opening frame. Sylvester Jr also contributed eight rebounds and four steals in the game.
Berkeley College started the second half on a 12-3 run that gave them the lead 47-43. New Rochelle clawed back and regained the lead, 59-58, on an Anthony Sylvester Jr lay-up in traffic. Berkeley again responded by immediately going on a 7-1 run. The Blue Angels twice cut the lead down to two in the game’s waning minutes, but the Knights of Berkeley College proved to be too much.
Sophomore Kobe Telford, saddled with foul trouble throughout the game, scored a season high 16 points to go with his six rebounds and two steals. Hunter Schenkel (Sayville, NY) also grabbed six rebounds to go along with 15 points. Elijah Harris (Flushing, NY) pulled down eight rebound and dished out six assists. Glen O’Loughlin (Yorktown Heights, NY) scored nine points with five rebounds, and Jaylin Gray (Brooklyn, NY) scored eight.
With the loss, the team’s record falls to 18-9.
